“English is a key skill for working in an international market” - Leo Or - Financial Services Director, Hong Kong
Today, we hear from Leo Or. Leo is a Hong Kong based director in a global financial services company. His career has taken him to 3 different continents - we hear more about how his Business English skills have been essential in building his career.
When did you start learning English?
I started learning English as part of the curriculum at primary school in Hong Kong. However, it was at a later stage that I realised there is a difference between academic English and business English.
Why do you think Business English is important for international professionals to learn?
It is perhaps the other way around - Business English is a key skill for individuals to be able to work in an international market, especially when the world is becoming increasingly connected as a result of globalisation. Being the language of international communication, it works as an enabler in business communication and in building working relationships with people across different locations.
How has speaking English helped you in your career?
I have lived in 6 different countries, and English was essential in helping me adapt to new environments and connect with people from different backgrounds. Business English helps provide a structured and logical way for me to articulate my thoughts, which in turn allows me to have improved conversations, write quality reports and make presentations with impact - to a global audience.
What advice would you give to people considering a Business English course?
Business English is a skill that you invest in for a life-long return.
