A Glass of Thames?
Though the depth of the river changes along the course of the 350km, its deepest point is an impressive 20 meters. This makes it an ideal home for several species of fish, and 125 are believed to be living in the Thames. These include salmon, eel, seals and - on a couple of occasions in 2006 and 2021 - whales.
The Thames is also said to be one of the cleanest city rivers in the world. This may seem surprising, given that the name ‘Thames’ is said to derive from a Latin word meaning ‘dark’. Changes to London’s sewage system in the 1960’s revived the water, and after a process of filtering, the Thames now provides two thirds of the drinking water consumed in London.
