The history of Canterbury Cathedral begins over 1400 years ago when St Augustine arrived at the Kent coast as a missionary from Rome. After being ordained by the Pope, St Augustine became the first Archbishop of Canterbury and had the Cathedral built within the Roman city walls, where it remains to this day.
