Malaga “25 start-ups in English by the end of 2023”

Business English in Malaga.

This was the challenge set by one of the most active investors in Europe.

Startup Wise Guys talked of the possibility of Malaga becoming ‘another Lisbon’ and a centre for international start-ups. The huge ambitions and potential for Malaga were outlined, however, in May of this year, the investor highlighted that the key challenge to this was the ability to speak Business-English. The urgent need for Malaga businesses to improve their Business English was outlined - as this is key to be able to deliver effective pitches and for their growth (Uno de los inversores más activos de Europa pone deberes a Málaga: 25 'startups' en inglés antes del fin de 2023 (elespanol.com)).

Malaga as a tech hub.

With plenty of sunny days, access to the coast and delicious local cuisine, it is easy to understand why Malaga has been a popular tourist destination for decades.

However, what not so many people will be aware of is that Malaga is also fast becoming a tech-hub within Spain - attracting investment from established giants such as Google, Vodafone and Telefonica, along with many tech start-ups who have chosen to base themselves there.

The city is well set-up to attract investment. Both the University of Malaga and Malaga Tech Park (the “Spanish Silicon Valley”) play a key role in the city's technological advances. In the first half of 2023 alone, over 3000 new start-ups have registered in the province, the third highest in Spain.

How else has Malaga become such a huge player on the global tech scene? There are multiple reasons, but one of the biggest milestones was Google’s 2021 decision to invest €530 million into Spain to support the country’s digital transformation. The Centre of Excellence for Cybersecurity, which forms a major part of this project, is due to open next to the city’s busy port later this year, and will attract a vast amount of attention from tech leaders across the globe.

Digital Enterprise Show.

In June 2023, we attended the Digital Enterprise Show - an annual three-day conference for the tech industry - in the city. As Tech English specialists, we relished the opportunity to meet with several of the over 400 of the world’s top tech companies and over 500 of the world’s best digital experts. Together, the conference sought to bring together crucial knowledge, skills and solutions to shape the future of the industry visitors and exhibitors feel so passionately about.

We had a fantastic time at the conference, following up with a virtual tour of Malaga Tech Park, and engaging with a range of tech leaders to understand the latest developments in the fields of tech and life sciences, along with future opportunities and challenges.
