Thirty Nine Crowns

Since William I - aka William the Conqueror - was crowned in 1066, the coronation of every British monarch has taken place at the Abbey. The thirty-ninth was the most recent, and this of course was that of Queen Elizabeth II, who was crowned all the way back in June 1953.

Though she had officially already become Queen in February the previous year, her public coronation and celebration was deferred to allow a period of mourning for her predecessor - and also father - George VI. This is why in June 2022, millions of people across Britain took to the streets to celebrate Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee and seventy year reign.

Other noteworthy monarchs to have been crowned at Westminster Abbey include Henry VIII, Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria, each who played a key role in British history.
