Specialist Seafood, and more!

First and foremost are the humble ‘fish and chips’, a staple of British seaside culture and an absolute ‘must try’. Locally caught fish is fried in a golden batter and served in paper with fluffy chips seasoned with salt and vinegar. The absence of plates mean that these delectable dinners can be enjoyed ‘alfresco’ on the beach, a perfect accompaniment to a sunset! As one might expect, Whitstable boasts a number of established ‘chippies’ and among the most highly regarded are Ossie’s and VC Jones, both located on the High Street.

Then there’s the delicacy which Whitstable is most famous for, so celebrated that the town dedicates an entire festival to it each year - the oyster, an edible saltwater mollusc. Locally farmed, Whitstable’s oysters are known for their high quality, and are usually served in their shells with a dash of vinegar and horseradish. Whilst oysters may be an acquired taste, to sample one represents a true Whitstable experience, and one of the most fitting places to do this is at the Whitstable Oyster Company restaurant.

Whilst Whitstable is mostly synonymous with seafood, the town caters for all different tastes and preferences. Most chippies offer vegetarian options, and both the Harbour Market and newly opened South Quay Shed boast a number of micro-eateries ranging from Thai food and burgers, to explicitly vegan cuisine. In the town centre, there are a number of independent cafes, tearooms and public houses.
