The British Empire sits at the root of how English became a language that spread across the world. Members of the Empire included India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and many African nations. This meant the language had a huge global reach, which has remained even since decolonisation and the end of the British Empire. The growth and influence of the USA has also ensured that the language remains dominant.
