The Input of Famous Architects

The Trentham Estate began life as early as the eleventh century, and started off as a royal manor which served as a meeting point for religious communities. The building was purchased by a local wool merchant named James Leveson in the 1500s and remained within the family. The original buildings were altered over time and new ones added, included a country house designed by Charles Barry, who also designed the Palace of Westminster. Though many of the buildings were demolished in the 1900s - including most of the famous Trentham Hall - Barry’s house and other original buildings can still be found on the estate.
They are surrounded by Trentham Gardens, a country park designed by famous English gardener, Capability Brown, in 1758. The Gardens consist of formal Italianite gardens surrounded by magical woodland, and in more recent years a number of high profile gardeners have contribute towards their redesign, including Piet Oudolf and Tom Stuart-Smith.
