Strong Competition
As such a desirable place to study, competition for places is very high. In 2021, the University offered 3,300 places for Undergraduates, but received 24,000 applications for these. To be offered a place at the University of Oxford is therefore regarded as an extremely impressive achievement.
Though the University is an excellent provider for each of the 350 courses it offers, there are some subjects where it enjoys a particularly good reputation. It ranks first in the world for arts and humanities, and within the top five for sciences and medicine. The most frequently applied to courses are Politics, Philosophy & Economics (PPE), Medicine, Law and English Literature.
The University of Oxford is also known for its rowing team. In a city where punting is a popular pastime, it is no surprise that the University has its own Boat Club, which enjoys a fierce rivalry with the its equivalent at the University of Cambridge. Each year, the two teams compete in a race along the River Thames in London.
