Learn in Beautiful Scenery
A few hundred yards from the main Museum is the former Dinorwic Quarry Hospital, which for over one hundred years provided medical care specifically for the slateworkers. It is known for having one of the earliest X-Ray machines in North Wales, and after its closure in 1962 it re-opened as a Visitors’ Centre which people continue to visit today.
The buildings surround Lake Padarn, an attraction in itself. At two miles long, Padarn is one of the largest natural lakes in Wales, and is a popular place for boating and hiking, affording breathtaking views of Snowdonia in the background.
The National Slate Museum and the Padarn Country Park is an excellent way to take in beautiful landscapes whilst learning and celebrating an important part of local heritage and industry. This was recognised in 2021, when the slate landscape was added to an impressive list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
During our Active Snowdonia course, delegates will have the opportunity to both visit and study in the Museum, alongside opportunities to hike and kayak around the Lake.
