Preserving & Promoting the Past

The National Slate Museum is based in what were the workshops of the once-operational Dinorwic Quarry, within the Padarn Country Park. Its purpose is to preserve artefacts and educate visitors on the area’s slate mining past, and it has been doing this since 1972, three years after the quarry closed.
The Museum is recognised worldwide, featuring on the European Route of Industrial Heritage, and has a number of features for visitors to enjoy, including the largest working waterwheel in Britain and the re-constructed cottages of Victorian-era slateworkers.
The Llanberis Lake Railway - a narrow gauge heritage railway - runs by the Museum taking passengers to the village of Llanberis and round Lake Padarn.
